Dear John Letters...

* Please provide address
On average out of every homeowners is "scammed" or "ripped off" by a contractor. This is due to the homeowner trying to "save money" or failing to properly research the contractor they are doing business with. Remember if it sounds to good to be true then it usually is. Below are a few tips you can follow in order to avoid being a victim and having to loose out on more than money such as "peace of mind."
1. LONGEVITY OF BUSINESS: 10+ years usually means the companys not going anywhere.

2. NO MONEY DOWN: Beware of contactors requsting money upfront or only accepting cash. A trustworthy and reputable business will not ask for any money until the job has been completed.

3. SPECIAL PRICING: Substantional discounts for a few selected homeowners.

4. HIGH PRESSURE: "Today only deals"

5. INTRODUCING NEW PRODUCT: "Model or Showcase home"

6. LENGHTY PRESENTATIONS: Designed to wear homeowners down.

7. COMMISSIONED SALESMAN

8. CHECK WITH THE BETTER BUSSINESS BUREAU

9. VERIFY ACTIVE LICENSES / INSURANCE

10. CHECK REFERENCES

Ultimately there are many more ways homeowners can be taken advantage of but keep in mind if no money has been exchanged you've made a wise decision. A successful and honest company should be able to start a project without any of the homeowners funds and accept draws as the project is completed.
